Whole-service reviews

Although I would always encourage providers and managers to continually assess their service against the five domains and 24 KLOEs, using Therapeia’s KLOE Audit Toolkit or a similar type of resource, I recognise that this is not always practical.  Furthermore, even if you do manage to collect plenty of evidence, it is not easy to be able to interpret the value or relevance of such information, or what it means in terms of a potential rating for the service. What’s more, it is often useful to have a ‘fresh pair of eyes’ look at the evidence and to see what it says about the service.

Therefore, I can also provide a review of your whole service based on gathering evidence for each of the CQC’s key lines of enquiry (KLOEs). The aim is to ensure that you have a safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led service, and to identify any areas for improvement.

There are two types or ‘levels’ of review:

  1. A ‘standard’ review, which involves me spending a day at your premises going through key documentation, talking to key stakeholders (service users, relatives, staff, etc), and getting an overview of the service.  As indicated above this process is ‘benchmarked’ against the KLOEs in order to ensure that the information collected is related to the the types of evidence that the CQC look for during their inspections.
  2. An ‘enhanced’ review, which includes all the elements of the ‘standard’ version but in addition involves a closer examination of key documentation, more in-depth conversations with stakeholders, and a broader discussion with your management team regarding any issues found during the review and suggestions for improvement where necessary.  The enhanced review visit can last up to two full days.

In both cases, the review process would include a follow-up report with recommendations.  Prior to the visit I would send you a list of key evidence that I would like to look at during my time at your service.

Please note: Therapeia cannot provide you with a ‘mock rating’ as part of the review because the ratings process is a complex one involving discussions and negotiations between members of the CQC inspection team and with their manager. Therefore any ‘rating’ given to you by a third party such as Therapeia is at best likely to be questionable, and at worst positively misleading. However, Therapeia will be able to give you a good indication of the quality of your service and any improvements that need to be made.
